The first thing I noticed upon arriving at Aaron and Claire’s Los Angeles workshop was the silence. No music, just the occasional cock-a-doodle-doo from the roosters in the backyard of the house next door and the sounds of their tools. Somehow, though, this was ok. The mood in the shop was just right–peaceful, even, despite the whine of the table saw. When I arrived, Aaron was starting to put some of the finishing touches on custom made display pieces for the sauces sold by LA burger joint Umami Burger while Claire sat at a grinding belt working on a jewelry piece. The first question I had for was about the origin of their name, We Are MFEO. They looked and laughed at each other and then Aaron told me the story of them meeting while working at MySpace and then explained how their shared love of design made it obvious that they were made for each other. We are Made For Each Other. After MySpace’s crash and burn (does anyone really miss the pressure of setting your top 8, though?), Aaron decided he would take on the task of renovating the couple’s new love nest. Through Aaron’s grandfather’s recent passing, MFEO was born. Aaron travelled to Oregon and piece by piece, dismantled his grandfather’s barn which, to this day, has been the sole source of wood in all of MFEO’s incredible furniture pieces. Intent on creating pieces from as much salvaged material as possible, Aaron and Claire consistently find old chairs and various other pieces of furniture in the garbage or on the street, dismantle and then refinish the piece into a beautifully updated version of its former self.
